PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder)

Jonathan Shay, MD, one of the country’s most notable psychiatrists specializing in PTSD, was quoted as saying that when it comes to treating PDST “one should put aside everything one was taught in college”. The trauma and life threatening experiences that lead some individuals to sink into the darkness of PTSD cannot be treated using conventional methods. The circumstances surrounding the causes of PTSD, albeit, ghastly as they are, vary from one individual to the next. For one of the best resources to help understand these causes from a warrior’s point on view, I would suggest reading Achilles in Vietnam by Jonathan Shay, MD. Needless-to-say, there are few life experiences that can equate to seeing one’s comrade-in-arms, who was standing by your side, vanish within an instant by taking a direct hit by an artillery round and the subsequent cry of the surviving friend “why him and not me!” Unfortunately, the vivid haunting memories brought on by PTSD well up uncontrollably to many PTSD sufferers. And the unconscious actions resulting from these memories often lead to divorce and loss of employment. Project:We Care, Inc. with much compassion and a desire to be sensitive to the unique issues associated with the onset of PTSD is committed to providing a transitional home for up to two years to facilitate the eventual reintegration of the homeless vet into society.
